The island of St. Theodore which locals refer to as “Thodorou”, was a sacred asylum during the Minoan Period while during the Venetian occupation, two fortresses were built as to prevent invasions of pirates and Turks whose ruin remain to this day. In recent years, Thodorou has been declared a protected area where human presence is prohibited. Its sole habitants are around 80 wild, indigenous goats named KriKri, and since 2009, short hourly visits for tourists, are allowed.
